Sukoon Houseboat

Moored on the mirror-calm waters of Kashmir’s Dal Lake surrounded by the snow-dusted peaks of the Himalayas, Sukoon perfectly symbolises it’s Sufi meaning; an elevated state of mind combining peace, wisdom and contentment

Set among floating gardens of flowering lotus in a secluded corner of Dal lake, with views of the misty Pir Panjal mountains, fairytale hilltop forts and temples, Sukoon has been sensitively restored to seamlessly blend the old-world charm of a traditional houseboat with modern comforts.

Original intricate carved wood panelling, ornate chandeliers, whirring fans, creaky pine floors and colonial style furniture are complemented with cool cream linens and colourful silks to add a contemporary twist.

There are ample spaces to relax; curl up with a good book in the calm of the opulent living room, or take Kashmiri tea laced with saffron and cardamon on the verandah, but it is Sukoon’s stunning sun terrace that sets it apart from the crowd, a private space to gaze at the view and soak up the sights and sounds of life on the lake. From sunrise to sunset gaily painted shikaras and floating flower sellers laden with roses and delphiniums drift by, parents paddle children to and from school and fishermen cast their nets. Nap in the shade or bask in the sunshine, and as the moon rises above the shimmering lake it is ‘the’ place to sip a sundowner before a delicious supper of Kashmiri and continental treats taken on deck or in the intimate candlelit dining room.

All five bedrooms are sumptuous and capture the elegance and romance of nostalgic houseboat opulence. Deep mattresses and crisp cotton sheets ensure a restful night’s sleep and generous bathrooms pamper with rainforest showers, bathtubs, piping hot water and delicious organic products.

For guests who can tear themselves away there are fascinating days to be spent exploring.  Visit Mughal gardens, timeless mountain villages and the bazaars and mosques of Srinagar’s old town or simply enjoy the pleasure of reclining in a shikara as you are paddled around the tranquil lake.

Sukoon Weekend

"On the unexplored northern part of the Malabar coast and flanked by a freshwater lagoon is this near-perfect heaven of peace and pampering. The cottages are designed and built along the traditional fisherman's thatched huts but each on with enough comforts to keep a five-star groupie enthralled."
